The Rural Voice, 1992-12, Page 70Farmer/politician back in harness Tony McQuail: back again. Six months of recovery in the clean country air have apparently put the fighting spirit back into Huron county farmer/politician Tony McQuail. McQuail had left his position as executive assistant to Elmer Buchanan, Ontario's minister of agriculture and food, last spring (see story in July issue of The Rural Voice) because the hectic pace was leaving him too little time for his family. Last month, however, he won the New Democratic Party nomination for the Huron -Bruce riding in the next federal election (he was the candidate for the NDP in 1988 as well and ran the successful campaign for Paul Klopp in the 1990 provincial election in Huron riding). McQuail said that some of the issues he cares most about can only be addressed at the federal level. McQuail is a former president of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture and winner of the federation's award for outstanding contribution to agriculture. He was a member of the Foodland Steering Committee, acting on behalf of farmcrs in the path of Ontario Hydro transmission lines from the Bruce Nuclear Power Development. He won the nomination over Grey Township farmer Ross Hemingway.0 People Doug Ireland (left) presented the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture Award of Merit to Marlene and Bill Davis at the Nov. 14 annual meeting of the BCFA. The award, normally presented by Brian and Gisele Ireland, was presented by their son Doug when they were unable to attend. In making the award, Doug Ireland noted Bill is a past president of the Bruce Federation and had been instrumental in starting the Feeder Finance program. He is vice-chairman of Bruce's 1993 International Plowing Match committee. Marlene is a former Bruce County Diary Princess and, out -going Bruce President Allan Smith pointed out, a regular writer of letters to the editor when she sees things in print that don't properly represent agriculture. She is also head of the committee in charge of day care at the 1993 IPM.O Agar named Bruce County Ag Rep Beginning in December, Bruce County will have a new Ag Rep in charge of the Walkerton Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office. Don Agar, who has been Ag Rep in Middlesex County, will transfer to Bruce to take up the position. He has been Ag Rep in Middlesex for nine years, and with OMAF for 25 years. He described the switch to Bruce as a mutual agreement with OMAF. Don and his wife Carole own a farm near Whalan's Corners on the Middlesex/Huron boundary. He suc- ceeds Mac Bolton who retired earlier this summer. Agar will be only the eighth AG Rep in Bruce's history. 0 Don Agar, new Bruce Ag Rep.
