peak, according to the availability of
trees," adds Walker. "This year there
are a lot of trees on the market.
There is a good relationship between
private tree vendors and the service
club tree vendors in Owen Sound."
The Kiwanis Club sells their
Christmas trees for $20.00 GST
included, on their lot located on the
tennis courts at West Hill Secondary
School in Owen Sound. The lot is
opened six days a week, from 12
noon to 8 p.m., and members of the
Kiwanis Club do the selling.
Kiwanis member Arnold Kuhl
takes an active part in the tree selling.
"The Kiwanis members also load the
trees onto the transport wagons at the
tree farm," he says. "We do the
selling on the lot starting the first
Saturday in December. We sell trees
for two weeks."
"It's a community effort," adds
Kuhl. "The neighbouring farmers
near Hepworth usually help during
the harvest by bringing their tractors
Neighbouring farmers help at
Christmas tree harvest time
to pull the wagons loaded with the
trees. It's a great time, with everyone
helping each other!"
Last year the majority of funds
from the tree sales went to benefit
children in the area. "We have
several programs for children," says
Kuhl. "Children that benefit from the
tree sales are underprivileged
children, children with learning
disabilities, and children who need
specialized dental-orthodontal care.
Children are our major emphasis
program, but we also help with
seniors' Christmas long distance
calls."
What better way to celebrate
Christmas than to buy a real
Christmas tree and to help needy
children at the same time? As Elgin
Walker states, "Christmas trees are
good for the environment! While
they are growing, they are doing a
good job for the environment, but
they have to be harvested." With
well-managed tree operations such as
the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound
Tree Farm, a good supply of real
trees is practically guaranteed!
Merry Christmas!0
