Weather whittles
crop estimates
This month, my column is going
to deal with the obvious — the
disastrous crop. All year, we've
talked about the crop size in both
Ontario and the U.S., quoting figures
from Stats Canada and the USDA.
I've mentioned before that many
traders in Ontario have -questioned
production figures from Ontario even
without light test weights. Now that
we are seeing some harvest, it's quite
obvious that both the com and
soybean crops will come in short of
previous estimates.
CORN
The corn crop in Ontario has taken
the brunt of the cool weather and is
nothing short of disastrous. At the
time of writing, the Crop Insurance
Commission is willing to write off
any insured corn that is lighter than
grade 5 standards and as time goes
on, field conditions will likely render
a further large acreage useless. In
fact, corn that has not developed a
black layer and still has very high
moisture is beginning to smell of
ethanol. You may not notice this as
long as it is cold but when the
weather warms up, you should
become aware of the smell of alcohol
as well as the development of mould.
These two problems may also be
reasons to write off some crop. My
advice is — be sure you contact your
crop insurance adjuster and discuss
your options.
If you are in a position to harvest
your crop, you should do so and if
you can't feed your crop because of
quality, sell it and buy in some better
corn or other feedstuffs. There is a
large supply of other feeds such as
western feed wheat or barley, gluten
