"Oro World's Fair"
We are writing you with regards to
an article we have read in The Rural
voice. In a recent conversation with
Bob Humphries on a tour through
Huron County for our Soil and Crop
Improvement Association it was men-
tioned that you are claiming to have the
only existing school fair around (The
Lacy School Fair, Sept. 1992).
I wanted you to know that we too
have an active, enjoyable school fair in
our County of Simcoe. The "Oro r
World's Fair" as it is known was held
on Friday, September 25 with activities
beginning at the fair grounds at 1:00
p.m. We begin with a huge parade for
all school students and "marching",
something school children feel they
shouldn't have to learn any more.
Then there are speeches from the fair
president, local politicians, and area
humourists. There is a cattle show for
both dairy and beef, a sheep show, and
poultry, rabbits and hamsters or gerbils.
In the main school fair building
1000 exhibits of vegetables, baking,
flowers and crafts as well as artwork
adorn the walls and tables.
There are cursive writing contests,
spelling bees and a teachers' tug-of-
war. We haven't yet eliminated the
midway but two rides are plenty and
they also allow one tossing game.
Candy floss is probably the biggest hit
in the midway. However, the
children's toy tractor pull, dog and cat
shows also draw huge crowds.
The children are awarded points on
their entries, for example: 12 points for
first, 11 points for second, down to 1
point for twelfth. Three children from
grades K-3, 4-6, 7-8 are awarded as
trophy winners.
The senior fair is separate and held
on Saturday with a different kind of
entries and crowd.
All classes were well participated
in and we were fighting the weather
and frost this year to save the entries.
A special steam exhibit joined the
display area this year. It was truly
educational. Even though we were
exhausted today we are looking
forward to next year's fair.0

IN 1993, THE BIRD WILL BE EARLIER
THAN USUAL.
Canada's largest indoor farm show has made a major change.
You'll still be able to see the widest range of farm equipment,
products and services ever assembled under one roof. You'll still
be able to do it for four days. You'll just have to do it a few weeks
earlier than usual.
