A few dollars are always tucked
away in Sowden's office which he
described as a social fund, set aside to
celebrate the completion of big jobs
like the fall muster. Those working
together at the station tend to
socialize as well.
And the various characters and
personalities, from rodeo champions
to accomplished athletes and
transplanted urbanites, each referred
to by a nickname, continually add to
the mystique associated with
Glenaray. There is a sense of history
and heroics springing from the
eccentricities and largess of its
owners such as a son of whiskey
baron Johnny Walker who lost the
station to the bank after just three
years, and George Pinckney who
fathered 11 children, none of whom
were allowed to drink milk from the
age of six to 12 while having access
to 60 -gallon kegs of cider and beer.
Sowden fondly recalled
Glenaray's former poet Glenda Will,
who also happened to be the cook.
She died one year ago, just four
months after her book of poems on
life at Glenaray was published; a
work conveying the same sentiment
for the station as shared by its current
manager.
"Reading the poems creates a clear
picture of Glenaray for me," said
Sowden. The first poem in the book,
often presented to those visiting the
station, is entitled Kitchen Window—
Early Morning Light.
Working at my bench
In the early morning light
1 look out at the countryside
All shining, clean and bright.
Such a beautiful place 1 see
Shimmering in the sun
The sloping hills and Titan rocks
There since time begun.
Many trees of varying shades
The grass so rich and green
The dog motels and shearing shed
Make a lovely country scene.
As I make the breakfast
I'm the only soul around
And as I work 1 listen to
The peaceful country sound.
Soon the men will be in to tea
But on the record for the book
I'd like to say 1 thank the day
1 became a station cook.0
