The Rural Voice, 1992-11, Page 31The structure of the 4-H
organization has continually changed
over the years. The newest structural
change occurred in 1990, when the
Ontario 4-H council was formed,
made up of 18 elected 4-H
representatives plus five Ministry
staff. The province is divided into 18
regions, with each region including 2 -
three counties, districts, or regional
municipalities.
Once a year, the local 4-H
Associations within a given region
appoint 3 representatives to an annual
regional meeting. Every three years,
representatives to the regional
meeting elect one person from the
group to represent the region on the
Council.
Setting up the Council has truly
been a 4-H project, with organizers
learning to do by doing. "We learn
as we go," says Diane.
What does the future hold for 4-
H? "A continuation of adaptability
and flexibility of programs," she
says, adding that 4-H will find "more
creative ways of meeting needs of
youth." Diane says she also foresees
4-H "working with the Ministry of
Education and schools."
Ontario recently dropped the age
requirement to 10 years of age and
Diane believes that, in time, the
majority of 4-H members will be
younger still. "Older children are
busier with high school."
In 1990, to celebrate 75 years of 4-
H in Ontario, the organization sold
Christmas cards as a fund-raising
activity. The verse on the card
epitomizes 4-H. It reads: "Cherish
the children, For in their hearts lies
the joy of the season, In their health
lies the well-being of the world, In
their hands, they hold the future, And
in their heads are the dreams for
tomorrow which all of us can share.
God Bless the Children."0
The members are younger and there's
an emphasis on fun in today's 4-H.
