number of dairy meetings across the
province last winter. And talking
with many dairymen along the way,
I'm left with the conviction that there
are plenty of optimistic, business -
minded individuals out there who are
committed to maintaining a strong
dairy industry in Ontario.
Our challenge is to face the future
with the same optimism.0

Manage better
by listening more
"We tried that once before and it
didn't work" is a common reaction to
a new idea. Your response to a
suggestion will have a lot to do with
whether or not people like to work
for you — and how good a job they
will do. How well have you listened
and interpreted what was said?
The "new" idea may not have
worked some time ago for very good
reasons but conditions may have
changed that could show results now.
Or, you may be right and the idea
could be completely invalid.
Nevertheless, the opportunity should
be provided to have the idea
expressed. Allowing a worker to
voice a concern or a new idea will
show that you are willing to consider
different ways of getting things done.
As a manager you certainly do not
have a monopoly on better ideas.
Effective managers keep their minds
open for good ideas no matter where
they come from. They're also very
careful not to handle suggestions, no
matter how foolish they seem, in a
way that discourages people from
making them.
New ideas and innovations come
from alert minds that can see a better
or easier way to do a job. People feel
that they are part of a team and
usually make a suggestion because
they are trying to help solve the
problem. 0
