Ethanol gasoline went on sale at UCO gas bars across southern Ontario in late
May. A special ceremony marking the event was held at the Hanover UCO on May
29. Cutting the ribbon were (left to right) Wietse Posthumus, UCO District

Forages Now at Harriston July 9
Interested in multileaf alfalfa varieties? Thinking of buying a round baler, or
perhaps you are interested in alternative methods of storing large round or large
square bales of hay? To help you make these and other forage management
decisions, attend "Forages Now" a regional forage day being held on July 9 at
the farm of Victor and Margaret Roland. The farm is located on Highway 87,
five miles west of Harriston.
During the morning you will be able to go on a walking tour and hear from
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food Soil & Crop Advisors about the latest
on forages —
• Harvey Wright will be sharing his thoughts on the new multileaf alfalfa
varieties
• Keith Reid will be speaking on his experiences with seeding forages no -till
and giving some practical tips on how to make it work
• Paul Sullivan on forage additives
• Gang Peng about insect and disease management
• Joan McKinlay will help growers look at options for handling and storing
large bales
• Tracy Ryan, Grand River Conservation Authority will be speaking on
manure management practices.
Tours will continue all morning (every 15 minutes), with the first tour
beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the last tour starting at 11:15 a.m.
The afternoon will feature equipment demonstrations on windrow handling
equipment (rakes, tedders, inverters), large round and large square baling of hay
and haylage, and storing of both large round and square bales using wraps, tubes,
and bags.
Visitors will also have the chance to visit displays of forage units and forage
equipment throughout the day. Lunch will be available.0

Pasture capacity
and rental rate
Renting pasture can allow you to
keep more cattle than your own
pasture can carry. It can also give a
landowner some income without the
hassles of looking after cattle.
It may be worthwhile, though, to
have a formal rental agreement.
Then both landlord and tcnant know
their responsibilities before the cattle
go through the gate. A written
agreement is enforceable by law. It
determines how the costs and incomc
from the pasture arc to be shared. In
a pasture Icasc, the landlord supplies
the pasture and the tenant supplies
the livestock.
