SHOULD GOVERNMENT CONTROL BANKS Should the OFA lobby the govemment for more control over the chartered banks? In these economically difficult times are the Canadian people and government familiar with the extra fees charged for other bank services above and beyond the standard interest rates for deposits or borrowed money? What percentage have these hidden services increased and how do these increases affect your bank account? These fees for extra bank services slowly chip away the foundations of economic stability for farmers, small businesses and all low income people. In these days of belt tightening and cut backs, how do the chartered banks justify accumulating huge profits at the expense of the Canadian people? Taking on the task to investigate and research these "extra" services and their fees would require a great deal of time and energy. Would the results be worth the effort? Do people "believe" competition exists in the banking world? Perhaps, the banks need to be introduced to the concept of "Free Trade".0 Elmer Scarrow Executive Director, GCFA GCFA Directors' Meeting Thursday, May 28, 1992 OMAF Boardroom, Markdale 8:00 p.m. Members are welcome to attend
