Rita Ryan of Kitchener knew
Jonny through her love of antiques
and during a visit to Stratford stopped
in to see her old friend in Shake-
speare. She mentioned to him that
she was looking for a new challenge
and he took her to look at a building,
which was for sale. Within two
minutes, Rita had made up her mind
to buy it and begin a business.

building — its roots have been traced
back 140 years — Chanticleer is a
charming mix of antiques, Christmas
decorations, crafts and novelty gifts.

popular after she introduced them
that retailers soon began asking for
them.

was once an old tannery. The bottom
floor of the building is the show-
place of four independent dealers,
whose varied specialities give the
store its unique atmosphere.
Gloria Ross operates A Touch of
Country, which deals in reproduction
furniture and accessories on the
second floor of the co-op. The third
floor holds Timoni's Trunks and
Treasures, a selection of everything
from stereoscopic cards and viewers
to antique trunks and parts.
Another highlight for visitors is
the Old Union Hotel, home to the
second oldest business in modern day
Shakespeare, Harry Ten Shilling. The
