easier to attend fall fairs and local
events. "We like to show the old
tractors in operation, so we usually
take along an old machine to run, like
our shingle mill, or our drag saw,"
says Doug. "We also have a small
collection of stationary gasoline
engines."
For Doug and Sheila Wilson and
their three sons, Paul, Scott, and
Mark, collecting tractors is a family
activity. "It's a great way to learn
about the past. It's important to keep
history alive and this is what we do
with our old tractors," says Doug.
For Dave Chittick and his family
of Allan Park, near Hanover, the fam-
ily favourite is the Minneapolis -
Moline line. "My great-uncle used to
thresh with a Minneapolis," states
Dave. "He started out with a Water-
loo Steam Engine and a new 1932
Robert Bell Separator. In 1941, he
bought a Minneapolis -Moline Model
G and used it. My uncle used to
thresh over 100 barns a year in the
fifties," he continues. "They would
start in July and get home at
Christmas."
Dave's father, Lloyd Chittick,
bought the M -M Model G in 1959.
In the late forties, Dave's uncle, Jim
Wittie, snowplowed with a M -M
Model G. "There was a V -plow on
the front and a homemade wing on
the side," he states. "They made a
tongue -in -groove cab for the G big
enough for two men. They used the
G for snowplowing from 1947 to
1949. We still have that cab, too."
There were only 2000 of the
Minneapolis -Moline Model G's ever
made. The serial numbers run from
"160,000" to "162,000." The Model
G was made from 1939 to 1941. The
tractor has a horsepower rating of 60
z.t.s. "There were three Model G's
used in the area that we know of,"
says Dave. "We have all three, plus
two more that we've bought."
"Collectors really value the Model
G and they call it the `Granddaddy of
the Minneapolis -Moline collection',"
he adds. "In the U.S., I am known as
the `Canadian hog' because we have
five Model G's," he laughs. "Some
guys can't find even one!"
Another model in the Chitticks'
collection is the "Standard U", a 45 -
horsepower tractor made from 1939
