BATTERY -POWERED
SHEEPSHEARING
MACHINE
A British firm has developed a port-
able sheepshearing machine which is
powered by a car battery and thus al-
lows shearing to be carried out conven-
iently at any location.
The Longhorn 2.8 from W and M
Horner runs off any 12V battery, either
separate from, or installed in, a vehicle.
This makes it possible for sheep to be
sheared where they graze, without the
need for the long drives to the shearing
shed which can be time-consuming,
stressful, and can cause mismothering
of lambs.
One battery charge is normally suf-
ficient for eight hours of continuous op-
eration, during which the machine can
be used to shear up to 300 full -wool
ewes. It produces none of the noise,
fumes or vibration associated with
gasoline -powered shearing machines,
and because it operates at only 12V,
there is no risk of electrocution even if
it is operated in rainy weather.
The Longhorn 2.8 has a 1.85 m (6 ft)
flexible drive shaft, resistant to crack-
ing and is sheathed in synthetic rubber.
It is supplied complete with battery
cables, and there is an optional shearing
head. The total weight is only 10 kg (22
lb).0
ARISTOFAT GOLDEN
FLAKE IN CANADA
Aristofat Golden Flake, manufac-
tured by Nutrition Trading (Interna-
tional) Ltd. in the U.K. is a free-flowing
protected fat based on palm oil fatty
acids. It does not require pH exposure
before absorption can take place and
has a NEL of 7.09 Mcal/kg. Independ-
ent in -vivo studies have shown both
rumen protection and digestibility to be
very high.
As a result of success across Eu-
rope, Nutrition Trading (International)
Ltd. are pleased to announce the ap-
pointment of a distributor for Canada.
Nutritional Feed Additives of Fergus
are already well known within the feed
industry, as representatives for Chr.
Hansen Laboratories and International
Flavours and Fragrances. Having es-
tablished a good reputation within this
technical area of speciality ingredients,
they were the ideal choice to present
Aristofat Golden Flake to the Canadian
feed industry.
"There is a great potential for a
protected fat like Aristofat Golden
Flake," says Alun Baker of Nutritional
Feed Additives. "It combines both high
digestibility with good rumen protec-
tion in a form which is easy to handle
and is very palatable. Therefore, it is
ideal for adding extra energy to grain or
TMR rations for ruminants and swine."
To date, Aristofat Golden Flake has
met with excellent response throughout
Canada and is achieving success in the
Ontario area. Nutritional Feed Addi-
tives will be working closely on this
project with Prairie Micro -Tech Inc. of
Regina who are ideally placed to serv-
ice Western Canada. More details are
available from Alun Baker, tel. 519-
