Audience reaction was encour-
aging. Devotees of classical music
were delighted to be able to hear some
favourites without having to travel to
London or Toronto. Others more
familiar with country-and-western
pronounced the evening "great —
better than expected."
"Some were surprised we played
so well," David confessed, grinning.
Their debut was so successful that
the two gave a second recital in March
'91. "Cow and Sow Strike Again"
drew a larger audience, and all money
collected went to the Perth -Huron
VON. David and Dominik celebrated
the anniversary of their first concert
with a 90 -minute recital exactly one
year later. The audience was even
bigger, and so was the free-will collec-
tion, given this time to the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation.
"Cow and Sow"
schedule their concerts
for early spring and late fall,
when farm work
is less demanding and
the performers have
more free time.
David milks a herd of 36; half
are Holsteins and the rest, Jerseys.
He owns the cows and the quota,
and rents the barn from his in-laws.
Dominik recently moved to
another farm near Mitchell. The 120
sows in his farrow -to -finish opera-
tion run loose on straw in the reno-
vated barn. Feeding is computer -
controlled. He works 240 acres: 100
acres of corn and the rest in soybeans
and winter canola.
David and Dominik are thinking
of staging another performance in a
few months, before spring planting.
They have no dreams of someday
taking curtain calls from the stage of
Roy Thomson Hall, nor of entertain-
ing the elite at the National Arts
Centre. They are quite content to stay
in Perth County. Besides, they chorus
in unison, "The girls in the barn have
first priority."0
