Quilters would be interested in some of the pattern books and fans of needlework watch for Dover books that are full of iron -on transfer patterns. In the cooking area there was an interesting colouring/cook book for children published by Dover. It was written by Evelyn Johnson, and illustrated by Chris Santoro. The recipes included some of the simpler ones, like preparing dips for crudite, which was explained as the French term for raw vegetables. I tried one of their no -bake cookie recipes, and hope your youngsters enjoy making it. Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies Ingredients 8 cup saucepan waxed paper 1/2 cup shortening (butter or margarine) 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup milk 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 heaping tablespoons peanut butter 3 cups uncooked oatmeal Combine the first three ingredients over low heat until shortening melts and bubbles appear on the top of the mixture to show it has come to a boil. Boil 2 minutes. Tun off heat and remove pan from the stove. Add vanilla, peanut butter and oatmeal. Stir well, drop teaspoonfuls on waxed paper, and allow to cool. The Huron County Museum also stocks a few bird books, as well as some colouring books, to get the younger set interested in birding. If you are shopping for a gardener, check out the local garden centres for books, or seeds and bulbs, like amaryllis, to help your gardener make it through the cold winter.
