ENDOWMENT FUND
FOR BILL STEWART
The Wm. A. Stewart Endowment
campaign was launched during the
opening ceremonies of the International
Plowing Match. The announcement
was made by Peter Hannam, Chairman
of the Agricultural Leadership Trust,
and Mrs. Edythe Stewart.
"As Ontario Minister of Agriculture
and Food from 1961 to 1975, the Hon-
ourable William A. Stewart exempt ified
leadership in public service and com-
munity involvement. All of the rural
community — individuals, families,
businesses, and organizations — are
invited to participate through donations
to the Wm. A. Stewart Endowment,"
Mr. Hannam stated.
Interest income from the Endow-
ment will be used to assist in financing
the Advanced Agricultural Leadership
Program (AALP) in which promising
young leaders from Ontario's rural
community develop their skills through
intensive training, field work, and dia-
logue with national and international
leaders in agriculture.
The AALP was invited by the Agri-
cultural Leadership Trust, a unique part-
nership of the Ontario Ministry of Agri-
culture and Food, the University of
Guelph, the Ontario F: deration of Agri-
culture, and the Foundation for Rural
Living. Mr. Stewart served as Hon-
ourary Chairman of the Agricultural
Leadership Trust (ALT) from its incep-
tion in 1984 until his death in 1990.0

for an initial payment of $12.70 a bag for
the 1991 crop.
"The federal government would not
agree to this, and after four months of
trying to meet government representa-
tives to negotiate the issue, they simply
dictated to us what the initial payment
would be," says chairman Charles
