plans to expand his operation to an
eight hour a day job by next year.
Like traditional farming, bait worm
farming is not without its complica-
tions. Some farmers have problems
with breeder worms that die or don't
produce enough eggs, or growers that
die or don't grow fast enough, or eggs
that don't hatch.
"The worms have no natural dis-
eases," says Bob Vriesma, "so if
they're dying, look to see what you
did wrong."
"Little things matter," he says. "If
you start feeding every 16 days
instead of 14, it makes a difference.
The pails hold enough food for 14
days."
Unlike other livestock, he says,
"worms don't complain. They don't
do anything. There is no noise." He
thinks perhaps people forget these are
actually livestock.
Many things can affect the prod-
uctivity of the worms: room tempera-
ture and humidity; temperature of the
composted food, too hot can burn
them; pH level of the feed, moisture
level of the feed; and the acidity of the
water used. The combination of peat
loam, newspaper, and grains must be
accurate. Attention to detail is a must.
"It's a nice envirop -it," says
Peipp, "because the work place has no
noise or odour, has a nice temperature,
and is clean."
Unlike other livestock farmers, he
doesn't have to worry about the
neighbours complaining about the
smell or the noise coming from his
farm operation.°
