vaccine, loss of weight, and condition
of the animals with the disease. One
important advantage is that the
vaccine can prevent further outbreaks
of the disease, and reduce the severity
of the outbreak if one occurs. This is
an important consideration in feedlot
operations. It is generally recommen-
ded that the vaccine not be used when
the disease is not present in the flock
or herd. Currently, the vaccination is
not routinely administered. Animals
basically self -vaccinate themselves by
having a mild form of the disease.
Three types of medical tests are
used to determine the presence of orf.
Tissue cell cultures, fluorescent anti-
body tests, and the use of the electron
microscope can verify the presence of
this type of cell. Persons with orf
should avoid corticosteroid and im-
munosuppressive drugs.
As with other diseases relating to
agriculture, contagious ecthyma is not
readily diagnosed, as many medical
personnel are not always aware of
agriculturally -related diseases. Anti-
bodies are not effective on viruses,
although they can work on secondary
bacterial infections that can com-
plicate orf.
In my case, I was fortunate that my
doctor had previous experience with
orf, and I received tetracycline. The
orf continued to grow for two days
until the medication helped relieve it,
but the back of my hand was swollen
and sore, due to fluid under the skin.
As the orf healed, it healed from thk;
outside toward the centre of the
lesion. The scab finally came off,
leaving a circular red mark for most of
a year.
1 am the only member of my
family to have had a smallpox vac-
cination, and the only one who con-
tracted orf. Is there any connection
between these two viruses? Does a
smallpox vaccination make one more
likely to get orf? It's an interesting
theory ...
It is to a farmer's advantage to
seek medical attention when any type
of unusual sore forms on hands, face,
or feet. An important link between
L the agriculture environment and gen-
eral health can be established by
working with the medical com-
