The Rural Voice, 1991-10, Page 25branch of the Consumers Association of Canada. She said most consumers weren't aware of the problems Cana- dian farmers are having, and she said CAC fully supported the farmers' request for a made in Canada food policy. "You have to make consumers understand how little of their food dollar goes to you, the farmers." Brian Ireland, a Teeswater area farmer who works for the Queen's Bush Rural Ministries, an organ- ization set up by local churches to offer advice and support to farmers in crisis, said the depressed crop prices can lead to depressed farmers, and suicides. He said he had a call that very day from MPP Ellen MacKinnon (Lambton NDP), who said that three young farmers in her county had com- mitted suicide within the week before. Ireland asked the crowd to be on the lookout for changes in behaviour of their neighbouring farmers. "If they don't appear to be themselves, and they suddenly change their habits, try and talk to them or get them some professional help," Ireland said. Organizers said they will give the government until the first of October before they'll take further action. The "line in the dirt" committee doesn't want to take over from any of the present farm groups. "The intention of the group is not to form a new farm organization, but rather to enhance the efforts of existing farm organizations and commodity groups," says Elliott Lowry of Ripley, another of the organizers. "It's clear from the more than 1,000 people who attended our gather- ing in Lucknow that something must be done quickly to ensure the survival of agriculture," he says. The pleas got immediate action from Ontario Agriculture minister Elmer Buchanan who announced at the Plowing Match that he would be asking cabinet for an interim payment of $93 million under the GRIP to flow to farmers this November. However, farm leaders say that is just borrowing from next year's money, and they are still short the $124 million difference between 1990-91 crop prices and what GRIP and NISA would have paid had it been in place.0 Seaforth SPORTS CARD SHOW with Special Guest - Bobby Hull Saturday, Oct. 5, 1991 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Seaforth District High School Admission $2.00 Under 6 free with adult (held in conjunction with Seaforth Fall Fair) IFKirne,Mills,Dunlop. neree Accountants Providing a full range of accounting, taxation, and management services to farmers and agri-businesses since 1934.
