20 THE RURAL VOICE
To raise money, "Line in the dirt"
organizers were selling hats and t -shirts
with their slogan.
farmers will leave farming this winter
because they won't have money to
plant their crops next spring.
Hill said Canadian farmers need a
government support system similar to
the American's to help them through
periods of low prices. U.S farmers,
through the "Food Security Act,"
know what they'll receive for their
crops before they are planted.
Politicians present on the stage
included Bruce MPP Murray Elston,
who is also interim Ontario Liberal
Leader; Huron MPP Paul Klopp, who
is parliamentary assistant to the
Ontario minister of agriculture and
food; and Huron -Bruce MP Murray
Cardiff, who is parliamentary assistant
to the federal minister of agriculture
and food. In the audience was MPP
Noble Villeneuve, who is the Pro-
gressive Conservative Agriculture
critic in the Ontario legislature, and
MPP Bill Murdock (PC, Grey).
All said they shared the concerns
of the farmers, and would take them
back to their respective governments.
Cardiff was booed several times by
the hostile crowd. Wilkinson said the
farm groups had a verbal promise last
fall that the government would make
up for any shortfall in income —esti-
mated at about $124 million for
Ontario farm:crs — to cover the 1990-
91 crop until the new programs kicked
in. "It's time they lived up to their
promises," he said
Also present was Joan Husser of
Goderich, president of the Ontario
