DIALOGUE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IS IMPORTANT
The Grey County Federation of
Agriculture believes that environmental
issues require understanding and co-
operation between the lawmakers and
the people to whom those laws apply.
There is no better way than to have
ongoing dialogue on the issues.
On a very hot night on June 25, the
executive of GCFA met with three rep-
resentatives from the ministry of the
environment to discuss the following
items: tire recycling projects, Environ-
mental Bill of Rights, rural estate devel-
opment, pesticides grower certification,
and waste management in Grey County.
The proposed EBR, when it is
passed, will have quite an impact on the
way we farm today, and the OFA at the
provincial level must stay involved with
the lawmakers to protect the farmers'
interest.
Rural estate development, espe-
cially in Grey County because of the
high number of severances, has become
a high priority for MOE. The MOE now
get involved in more severance applica-
tions that do not meet the present re-
quirements of the Grey/Owen Sound
official plan. They will also have a large
input to any revisions to the official
plan.
Pesticides grower certification and
waste management on the farm again
arc under review. Certifications will
become more stringent in the future.
Pesticides and farm waste have an im-
pact on the environment if not managed
safely. MOE will get more involved to
ensure the safe handling of these two

items, especially on tile drained land.
Tire recycling is high on the agenda
of the present government and with
eight million tires used in Ontario
yearly, Tots of ideas are being explored
to recycle this material. Studies are
under way to use shredded tire material
as part of asphalt for paving. If these
tests prove successful, all the tires pro-
duced in Ontario could be used up with
the amount of asphalt required every
year for our roads.
Ruth Grier, the new minister of the
environment, is totally opposed to the
use of tires for fuel to make cement or

any other method of burning of tires.
Many other uses are being studied and a
lot of money is being spent on tire recy-
cling. It seems to me that the govern-
ment is realizing that we have many tires
and now is in the process of inventing
the wheel.
With all these problems at hand and
the wheel being reinvented, OFA cer-
tainly must have ongoing dialogue with
MOE on all farm related issues that
affect our daily farm operations.0
