The Rural Voice, 1991-08, Page 35NEWS MARIJUANA WATCH In an effort to diminish the cultiva- tion and subsequent trafficking of ma- rihuana in the counties of Grey and Bruce, the Owen Sound Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are seeking the public's assistance in locat- ing illegally cultivated marihuana. The crops are planted along fence lines, in areas of fields which are remote or unused, and on farms that are rented. You can aid the RCMP by: walking your own fence line, checking unused lands bordering your farm, or just reporting any suspicious activities you might observe, such as persons entering wooded areas carrying jugs of water or shovels, or leaving these areas carrying plastic bags. Points to remember are that the growing season for the marihuana plant is June to September, with harvest tak- ing place in early September. Locally, plants may attain a height of four to six feet on average, or up to eight feet if a supply of water is close by. The plants have a stalk similar to that of corn and usually bear an odd number of leaves (five, seven, or nine) which have a jag- ged appearance. On some species of the plant, late in the growing season, a dis- tinctive bud will be noted at the end of the stems. At the height of the summer, the plant can be distinguished from sur- rounding foliage as being noticeably "brighter green," almost fluorescent. If you have any information, or are unsure and want confirmation of an unknown plant, phone the Royal Cana- dian Mounted Police directly at the Owen Sound Detachment. The number is 519-376-4358. Collect calls are ac- cepted. Or call Crime Stoppers, toll free, at 1-800-265-3787. Any informa- tion received is treated confidentially and the caller can be assured anonymity. Please try to include lot and concession numbers, description of persons or ve- hicles, and license plate numbers in your call.° FARM CRISIS Farm leaders called on their mem- bers to mobilize and emphasize to members of parliament and the Ontario legislature the seriousness of the finan- cial crunch facing farmers during the transition from ad hoc programs to the newest safety net programs. "If politicians, including ministers of agriculture, think this financial crisis for grain and oilseed producers is just going to go away, they had better think again," said Roger George, president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. The financial crisis in the Ontario grains and oilseeds sector is the result of depressed market prices, the inequitable treatment of Ontario farmers, and the desire of governments to avoid any di- rectcash flow assistance during the tran- sition from ad hoc programs to new safety net programs. "The bills are piling up, and the re- turn on crops will not cover them be- cause of disastrously low prices. Tum- ing a blind eye to the problem will only make matters worse," said Frank An- thony, president of the Ontario Corn Producers' Association. "Farmers should call, write, and visit their federal and provincial members of Parliament and local media, and let them know just how serious the situ- ation is, and what the consequences will be of this crisis," said Larry Miehls, chairman of the Ontario Soybean Grow- ers' Marketing Board. Ontario farm leaders have called for an interim GRIP (Gross Revenue Insur- ance Program) payment, an increase in the initial price for wheat, export credits, an ASA (Agricultural Stabilization Act) top -up, increased provincial stabiliza- tion, equality on NISA (Net Income Stabilization Account) coverage, and a continuation of advance payment bene- fits for all grain and oilseed producers.° NEW PRODUCT?
