What are these modem devices which have replaced the scarecrow? The scare gun (costing $300 and up) produces a sound not unlike thunder- claps. Its detonations are produced by LP gas (propane) fired automatically by timer and piezo lighter. In looks it resembles an insect fogger rather than a scarecrow. Other modern devices, bangers (bird bombs), screamers (racket bombs), whistlers (whistle bombs), use .22 blanks and are fired from hand launchers. All of these stress the effectiveness of sound in driving birds away. Bangers and screamers also have an added visual effect in low light. According to an article in National Wildlife (Oct. - Nov. 1988) other devices have been developed, some resembling the original scarecrow. One, a mechanical scarecrow mounted on a propane gun, pops up three feet when activated. Another employs a plastic scarecrow which inflates when a detector picks up movement. Non -scarecrow -like contraptions include a plastic owl which broadcasts blackbird distress calls. In another bird -scaring attempt, shimmering mylar strips were stretched across fields to reflect light and produce a roaring sound in the wind. Apparently, the effectiveness of any of these devices depends on the effort growers put into implementing an eradication program. As Marley says, "All of these devices are just tools — there is no magic box, never was, never will be." Recently, Associated Press re- ported a Florida resident, fed up with hordes of migrating buzzards annually taking over his town, built a scarecrow and draped it in Christian Dior clothes. It worked for a while until the buzzards attacked and tore it apart. Where has the scarecrow gone? Like the Model T, technology has intervened and replaced it with newer models, some hardly resembling the original.0
