information, a support centre, net-
working, and referrals to professionals
who can help us." To meet those
needs, Frances and other conference
participants opened Women's
Community Enterprises in London.
Since most of Shamley's work at
the centre has been on a volunteer
basis, the rewards come from working
with the future entrepreneurs she
meets.
"They are tremendously creative
people, with really good ideas. By and
large, they just need the support of
someone who's been through it."
Whenever possible, Shamley links the
future entrepreneur with someone al-
ready operating a similar venture.
This, she notes, is a bit like an intern-
ship program, but not as formalized.
The majority of the centre's pub-
licity has always simply been by
word-of-mouth. However, bank man-
agers, the Small Business Consulting
Program at the university, and the
business librarian at London Public
Library, also often refer people to
Women's Community Enterprises.
Nevertheless, taking the centre's
resources directly to potential entre-
prencurs in rural areas is a new idea.
"I would like it (the van) to be a
prototype for the delivery of other
services to rural areas," Shamley
notes.
"Removing necessary services
from small towns, combined
with poor returns from farming,
is forcing more people to leave the
country."
Not only are many educational,
health, and counselling services not
available in smaller communities, but
now even existing services are being
centralized in urban areas, Shamley
notes. The provincial government, for
example, is closing the Glencoe reg-
istry office and centralizing all the
records at the Middlesex County
building in London. This means,
Shamley says, that Glencoe and area
lawyers will have to pay staff to travel
all the way to London and stand in
line at the centralized registry office
for documents.
