They hope to rate them into three groups — excellent, good and average. Like Don Lobb, Shillinglaw says that farmers have to take a systems approach to no -till and just can't take one component by itself. "It's a system approach that has to be customized for each farm. You have to be flexible."0 12 TIPS FOR THE SUCCESSFUL USE OF NO -TILL CROP PRODUCTION by Don Lobb 1. Good soil drainage is important — more Important than soil type. 2. Always use the shortest possible crop rotation. Change crop types each year if possible. 3. Nitrogen for corn should always be applied below the surface residue. 4. Move most of the residue off the crop row area with planter -mounted equipment (never leave more than 10 per cent cover) when corn follows corn, cereals, or sod. 5. Adjust weed control strategy to take advantage of the different weed emergence/crop emergence relationship. 6. Be sure that all vegetation is dead before crop emergence. 7. Apply all phosphorous in a side band with the planter (minimum 20 lb/ac). 8. Apply at least part of the potash requirement in a side band. 9. Do some In -row tillage with planter - mounted equipment, enough to assure accurate seed and fertilizer placement 10. Careful selection of crop varieties for stress tolerance is critical. Different stresses are Introduced when tillage is changed. 11. Be careful with oat, wheat or rye residue — without proper management it can reduce yield of the following crop. 12. THINK SYSTEMS: No -till Is a conservation crop production system which does not employ primary tillage. Tillage (or lack of It) may not affect crop yield more than fertilizer management, weed management, careful variety selection, etc. A change of any one component can effect any any other component within a crop production system. Example: reduced tillage changes weed spectrum, which changes herbicide, which means reselecting crop varieties for tolerance to replacement herbicide. NEED TO: ✓ LEVEL A FIELD?
