The Rural Voice, 1991-07, Page 37are moved from 150 different hcrds of
90 to 100 different finisher operations.
Pigs move directly from weaner pro-
ducer to feeder farms, which ensures
higher health standards.
Buying and selling of feeder pigs is
done through a tele -auctioning system.
Sellers phone in on Tuesday, provide
their producer account number, the
number of feeder pigs for sale, and the
grade of hog they desire.
Quality Swine offers four grades of
feeder pig. QS I, which is 75 per cent
of their business, is a feeder pig from
an approved F1 Yorkshire - Landrace
crossed female with a minimum EBV
index, mated to an approved purebred
Hampshire or Duroc or a crossbred F1
Hampshire - Duroc crossed boar. The
Co-op's QS 2 feeder pig is from a
purebred female mated to a purebred
boar of another breed - a two-way
cross feeder pig, while QS 3 is a feed-
er pig from an unidentified female
mated to a Quality Swine approved
purebred Hampshire-Duroc or FI
Hampshire-Duroc boar.
Lastly, the QS 4 category, is for
new members who have just joined
Quality Swine and have no perfor-
mance data available. These hogs are
sold at a negotiated price.
Brian Vandenbroek of Yorkland
Farms near St. Thomas has been a
member of Quality Swine for two and
a half years, selling both breeding
stock and feeder pigs. His father was
a member for 15 years.
"Everybody benefits," says Van-
denbroek. "They do as much as they
can for you. There's no hassles, it's
one to one." He says you might get a
better price once in a while by going
some place else, but `over the long
haul it's as good."
"You've got somebody standing
behind you with service," he says, "a
lot of service."
To keep up on the quality and gen-
etic background of the pigs being pro-
duced, field representatives visit pro-
ducer farms every six to eight weeks,
and stock herds every three weeks.
Feeder pigs have a 24 hour live-
ability guarantee, so fieldmen do
follow up work to ensure the trans-
action went smoothly, and pigs were
up to the quality expected. Represen-
