NOTEBOOK
plants before they die. There are no
dog -proof plants!
Generally, a Farm Dog is smarter
than a lot of farmers. Just look where
he is on a hot day ... lying under a
truck or tree, or stretched out on the
cool grass. Working hours in summer
for a dog are early morning and late
afternoon. Any Farm Fog knows it's
better to relax from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The most important job a Farm
Dog does is to provide a warning
when a vehicle enters the laneway. A
farm dog is alert at all times (even
when he's stretched out relaxing).
There are several ways a Farm Dog
greets a visitor, and this is done at the
discretion of the dog. He can simply
stand and bark, or he can meet the
vehicle and stand close to it and bark,
or he can stand some distance away
and bark and when the person gets
out, he can run up close and greet
them. Farm Dogs seldom bite. They
prefer to be friendly and some are
even known to jump up ecstatically,
feet flying and tongues licking. The
third method is definitely not popular
in the spring and fall (see MUD).
A Farm Dog has a way of getting
around his farmer and other family
members. Dogs have such beautifully
expressive eyes and they know how to
use them. When told "no!" in no
uncertain terms, a dog can look up
with depths of pleading and/or apol-
ogy enough to melt the coldest heart.
This look also happens when there is a
juicy bone in smelling distance.
This look also appears when the
Farm Dog must be tied up while live-
stock are being moved or when his
farmer is doing work that does not
require the dog's presence. Those
brown eyes can say that being separ-
ated from his farmer for any reason is
disappointing. Only the toughest
cynic can refuse a Farm Dog's "look."
There are a few individuals that do
not deserve to have a dog, but, happily
enough, they are few and far between.
If you are among the many farm
families who have a good faithful dog,
give him or her an extra pat and an
extra treat in his dog dish tonight. He
will appreciate it! A salute to the best
friend a farmer ever had!O
