Now I hope with just the fall plowing left to finish on our farm, as with each year, when all the dangerous outside work is done, I can give a big sigh of relief. I'm very thankful that another year's work is done and no one has had any serious accident. I agree some of us tend to get careless in the rush to beat mother nature's showers etc., and I'm sure most farmers dread the endless trips to the mills, just as much as the few who pass the slow vehicles, and cut back in front a bit too close for comfort. Speaking as a farm wife, those women who want equal rights with men should follow a farmer for a week. Two days' work on most farms would be long enough. We enjoy The Rural Voice very much. Donna Corbett R. R. 1, Exeter, Ont LEANER AND MEANER In response to Jim Fitzgerald's "Behind the Scenes," on foodbanks in The Rural Voice, November 1990. I would like to start with the slogan "leaner meaner." A "leaner meaner" society is really akin to the law of the jungle where the fittest survive, the rest are simply pushed aside and sooner or later become an unbearable burden. We in Canada are fast mo- ving in that direction. While our poli- ticians are speaking of a "caring so- ciety," we are becoming intolerant. While making laws to legislate equality, the end result is the opposite. One cannot legislate neighbourliness. As we become "leaner" the inevit- able result is "meaner." But why must we become "leaner"? Who benefits? Apparently the producer does not. The worker loses his/her job. The line to the food bank becomes ever longer. The politician is trounced out of office come election time. So who benefits? The only answer I can come up with is the financier, big business if you will, the multinationals. How? Through "free trade," open borders, and allowing big business to relocate to the cheapest labour markets without losing its product market. (Of course when this market dries up through poverty, debt, what then ?) In the short term, big business will show a good return, a good bottom line, and that, my dear reader, is where it's at. That's the name of the game. The "free" market system. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. And that is really the law of the jungle, the 20th century jungle. So what is the solution? We need a different kind of people in govern- ment, wise people who are able to di- scern what is good for all Canadians. Let's face reality; those who've governed this land for the past 20 years have brought Canada to the brink of disaster. The past 20 years of decline should convince us that we can no more aff- ord the huge unproductive part of our society. Encourage gainful employ- ment; cut back on bureaucracy. Cana- dians must work together to turn the tide. We must return to sanity. We see a new tax being put upon us, the GST. On the one hand it is needed, however if its revenue is used to buy more votes through handouts and giveaways, then it will only make things worse. We in Canada to a large extent still believe there is a higher being out there, a God, a creator God if you will. This God makes demands on us, such as honesty, integrity, respect for life, and the environment. We ignore these demands at our peril. I have no doubt that is a large part of our problem.
