competitive world wage (some
countries pay about 50 cents an hour).
But why stop there? If food and all
other commodities should be able
to enter the country freely, then why
not labour? I am sure there are people
in other countries that would be glad
to come to Canada to live and work
with no restrictions. They would
probably be more efficient for less
pay.
Supply management holds over-
production to a minimum and prices
commodities in accordance with
the cost of production on the average
of the top most efficient farms. If one
wants to improve financial gain,
one must become a more efficient
manager. As supply management
farmers become more efficient, farm
gate prices of supply managed com-
modities will become cheaper.
Canadians should also be con-
cerned about the safety of imported
food. Most other countries do not
have the same high quality assurance
as Canada does. Consumers are
concerned about additives on Cana-
dian -grown food, but do we really
know what is coming into the country
on imported produce?
Farmers are becoming an endan-
gered species. Contrary to popular
belief, not just anyone can be a farmer.
It takes a special person and family to
cope and live with the adversities,
such as weather, livestock problems,
long hours, no sick leave, and holidays
that are virtually non-existent.
Farmers do not get paid time -and -a -
half just because it is the weekend or
Christmas.
Last, but not least, farmers have to
pay for their groceries, too!
