FEEDBACK
WRONG
COMPARISONS
There were some major faults in a
special report in the November 19
issue of Maclean's: "A Canadian
Campaign For Cheaper Food." Writers
neglected to research marketing
boards and pricing strategies. Farm
gate prices of milk, for instance,
have risen less than five per cent
over the past three years yet inflation
rates have gone up four to five per
cent each year. Instead of just
looking at marketing boards and
farmers as the causes of high food
prices, one should look at the process-
ing industry. They should become
more efficient at cutting costs by
reducing employee wages, cheaper
packaging, etc.
Maclean's said "marketing boards
have not acted in the best interests of
Canadians and we pay double the
average world price for milk. There
should be an orderly dismantling of
the supply management system." This
is inaccurate because Canadians are
ensured of self-sufficiency in food. It
is far better to pay a bit more for
home-grown food than to become a
third world country and be held
ransom by a foreign country for
our food. Food and housing are
essential to the well-being of mankind.
Everything else we can live without.
As far as soft drinks being priced
cheaper than milk, you get what you
pay for. It is up to the individual
person if they feed their family
garbage or good wholesome food.
An orderly marketing system such
as OMMB ensures a quality product.
Milk is highly perishable. What is a
dairy -man to do if his bulk tank is
full and he cannot ship it? (This was
the scenario before 1966 when the
OMMB was formed.) Is he to give
his product away freely and suffer
serious financial losses? Would
you??? Some so-called experts say
that supply management promotes
inefficiency. What about labour
unions? Wages are going up and
productivity is going down.
Maybe we should disband the trade
and labour unions and move to a more
