The Rural Voice, 1990-12, Page 61ADVICE bottle. Don't put dirty fingers in the calf's mouth. Consider the use of a frozen colos- trum bank for problem and high risk cases. Use colostrum from older cows, as they have the highest quality. Freeze it in icecube trays, as these thaw the quickest. Thaw in warm water slowly. Vaccination: Pregnant cows come in contact with scour -causing organ- isms and develop protective antibodies, which are then passed on to the calf in the colostrum. Vaccinating pregnant cows can pro- tect calves against organisms such as E. Coli, Rotavirus, and Coronavirus. If these are a problem in your herd, con- sider a vaccination program.0 Bill Schilthuis and Associates Goderich Veterinary Clinic IS YOUR TILE LIFE DRAINING AWAY? We don't really know much about the useful life span of tile drains. Unlike most investments, tile drains can't be looked at very easily. You can find a break or washout, but you can't measure general tile performance very well. There have been several studies in the U.S., but estimates on drain life expectancy range from 10 to 100 years. Work done in Ohio estimated drain life at 10 to 15 years, but found that some systems failed in 5 years. The drains that failed were often in unstable soil that caused shifts in grade or alignment, collapsed tubing, pulled joints, and plugged outlets, pipes, and manholes. In 1978 there was a study of 95 tile mains in Williams County, Ohio. The tiles ranged in age from 1 to 76 years. Of the 95 systems, 12 needed repair and 6 needed replacement. The other 77 sys- tems were working satisfactorily. A study of maintenance showed that 25 per cent of tiles less than 10 years old had been repaired. Of tiles 11 to 20 years old, 66 per cent had been repaired. All tiles over 40 years old had either been repaired or needed maintenance. Drain inspection needs to become a more routine chore. Most problems occur at junctions or abrupt changes in grade. Outlets are another problem area. A drainage map makes for quick inspec- tion of possible problem areas.0 FEED CARTS Quality built — Economically priced 58" L. x 22" to 36" 48" L. x 22" to 36" Close one end or both $220.00 Patz style $225.°° Dealer enquiries welcome Manufacturers of Farm Wagons, Grain Boxes, & Feed Carts Contact your dealer or call: BRUNS MANUFACTURING R.
