4-H BEEF CLUB SHOW AND SALE
The Huron, Bruce, and Grey County 4-H Beef Show committee held their annual
show and sale at the Tri -County Sales Barn near Hanover on October 18.
During the morning, 57 4-H club members exhibited their beef animals for judging
in the show ring. The winners are presented on page 23.
In the afternoon, the 4-H beef animals were sold at auction. The buyers were
local business people wishing to acquire some top-quality beef while supporting
young people in the farming industry. Maximum price paid was $1.95/Ib with an
average price of $1.31/1b.
Bottom: Nancy Scarrow, ROP technician with OMAF in Markdale is shown
checking the backfat thickness electronically of each cattle beast. These results will
be compared with actual carcass measurements. This is part of Agriculture Canada's
Blue Tag Program designed to predict carcass yield and quality.
Jim Synder, 4-H sale committee chairman, says that the sale is designed to help
teach the 4-H members how beef is marketed and the Blue Tag Program furthers the
learning aspect of 4-H membership.
