R. 1, Sebringville, NOK 1X0 393-5586 • The Rural Voice is provided to Perth County Pork Producers by the PCPPA REVIEW OF THE SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING The semi-annual meeting of the Ontario Pork Producers Marketing Board was held at the Skyline Hotel, Toronto, on September 13, 1990. The meeting began with the chairman's address which will be sum- marized in this release. The Communications Committee of the Board again held several seminars for county associations to improve their skills and knowledge of the total work- ings of the board. In addition 28 county presidents were hosted at a special meeting on July 26. The Executive Committee's biggest challenge was sow marketing. In addi- tion, other issues were studied: niche markets, carcass or product sales by the board, Carcass Evaluation Project, Genetic Task Force, and carcass sale to Russia. Incidentally, on-going discus- sions are taking place for similar future sales. A Promotion and Market Develop- ment Committee has moved to expand county promotion co-ordinators. (As a result, Huron and Perth Counties are proud to have Kim Scholl as their pro- motion officer.) This committee is also responsible for directing $180,000 into market development research in prod- uct packaging, meat technology, nutri- tional research, and factors affecting pork quality. PST is also being consid- ered. The Research Committee is also responsible for administering $0.04 per hog but feels it has generated over $2,000,000 worth of research. Twelve projects have been approved on such topics as manure additives, gene clon- ing, and electronic sow feeders. A complete write-up is available from councilmen or OMAF offices. Further work was commissioned with the St. Michael's Hospital to study human health concerns in hog barns. Yard projects, animal care, farm -fed grains, stable funding, tripartite, and market conditions were also presented. The sales manager's report shows a 7.6 per cent decline in sales ending the week of September 1, 1990. Only 2.7 per cent of the sales were to Quebec and 1.3 per cent to U.S. buyers. Market price averaged $161.86 for the first 35 weeks of 1990. Pork exports were similar to last year but live hog shipments in Can- ada were down 11 per cent. Net exports approximate 32 per cent of Canadian production. The semi-annual ended on a note of perceived optimism from the chairman Jim Goodhand predicting that the On- tario hog industry will remain at 80,000 marketing per week and will not drop to 60,000. He reviewed some of the re- sources of land, packers, feed supply, and markets that suited raising hogs.0 Summarized by Richard Smelski on behalf of the Perth County Pork Producers Association.
