BAR 5 SIMMENTAL
OPERATION SOLD
North America's leading full -blood
Simmental beef breeding operation, Bar
5 of Brandon, Manitoba, was sold re-
cently to three of the industry's breeders
from Markdale, Ontario.
Ron and Greg Nolan of Harkaway
Simmentals and the Langills of
Farnham Simmentals have assumed the
ownership of Bar 5, which consists of a
4,000 -acre land base and 1,000 head of
full -blood Simmental beef cattle.
The merging of Bar 5 and the opera-
tions of the Ontario buyers makes Bar 5
the largest Simmental full -blood beef
cattle operation in the world.
"Bar 5 is known around the world as
the production headquarters for supe-
rior Simmental breeding stock," says
Ron Nolan. "We plan to work closely
with Bar 5's present staff to maintain the
high standards they have established."
"We hope to expand the Ontario
operations into a superior source of beef
genetics," he adds. "Ontario has one of
Canada's highest populations of cows,
and I am excited about attracting many
international visitors to our Ontario
operation."
Headquarters for Bar 5 will remain
in Brandon, where all of the operation's
calves will be fed and developed. Har-
kaway and Farnham Simmentals will
continue to produce 70 calves a year
under the Bar 5 name in Markdale,
Ontario.
"Our objectives include the manage-
ment of Bar 5 as a hands-on, family
operation focusing on the breeding and
development of horned and polled full -
blood Simmental bulls and cow/calf
pairs," says Nolan.
Co-founder of Bar 5, John Draper,
says the Canadian business back-
grounds of the new owners "will be a
tremendous asset to the cattle industry.
I'm extremely excited about the future
of Bar 5 and look forward to working
with the new owners in reaching even
higher plateaus on a world-wide basis."
Bar 5 is a 21 -year-old company
which has held record-breaking sale
averages for the past 10 years. It was the
first cattle operation in Canada to import
Simmental beef cattle from France and
Switzerland.0
