kinds of fungi causing the dis-
colouration," explains Tu, "but three or
four of them are the most frequent. Now
we can start to develop control measures
through cultural practices, breeding,
and biological control."
In the past, Dr. Tu checked discol-
oured seeds for the presence of toxins.
He detected toxins in beans with a pink
discolouration. However, when discol-
oured beans were removed at the ele-
vator, the remaining beans were free of
toxin.
The research project is expected to
conclude in late 1990, with a report to
follow in 1991.

Tomatoes
that can take
the cold
Not all tomatoes are created equal:
some can withstand cold temperatures
better than others. "The first phase of
our work," says University of Guelph
crop science professor PeterPauls, "was
to screen for the trait so plant breeders
could identify those plants that were
cold -tolerant."
The screening technique was based
on the plants' photosynthetic machin-
ery. They were exposed to a chilling
stress and the researchers did an assay to
identify those that had been stressed the
least. The second phase, now under-
way, is to evaluate how transferable the
characteristic is.
Ontario growers could extend their
short growing season with cold -tolerant
tomatoes, and improve their ability to
compete in the marketplace. The
number of replanted tomato transplants
would also be reduced if transplants
could survive temperatures below 10°C.
Processors would benefit from a longer
domestic season too, by making more
efficient use of their facilities.
