The Rural Voice, 1990-09, Page 27berries from early July until freeze-up,
says Sullivan.
Yields are lower with fall -bearing
raspberries but that should be countered
with higher prices. An added bonus is
that picking is more pleasant in late
summer and early fall. Quality and taste
are being studied as well but, as Sullivan
says, "There is no such thing as a bad
raspberry."
The crop may also be an alternative
to grapes. "We are getting extremely
high yields in the Niagara area," notes
Sullivan. "There is no hand -pruning
since fall -bearing raspberries are
mowed to the ground each year in late
winter. Trellising is not required either,
so production costs are much lower."
There are barriers to overcome with
all research and this case is no excep-
tion. It is difficult to convince people
that there still are raspberries to pick in
late summer and that they are indeed a
product of Ontario.°

Keep the white
in white beans
Any white bean grower will tell you
that there is a problem with wet weather
at harvest time causing seed dis-
colouration. The bean pods and stems
turn black and then the seeds turn grey or
slightly pink.
The result is a higher percentage of
rejected seed at the elevator and reduced
returns to the producer. Overseas buy-
ers also question if the discolouration
means that mycotoxins are present.
When nearly 80 per cent of Ontario
beans are exported, the export market is
an important one to satisfy.
Dr. Mike Tu, plant pathologist at the
Agriculture Canada Research Station in
Harrow, has determined that there are
several fungi causing the discolour-
ation. The most prevalent is Alternaria
alternata. Others include the fusarium
species, the various soil fungi that can
enter cracked pods and seeds when they
are splattered by rain and mud.
