LUCKNOW HOSTS
NEW FARM SHOW
The Lucknow & District Kinsmen
are planning the first in what they hope
will be a long line of successful summer
farm shows for the area.
The show will be held at the
Lucknow arena on July 13 and 14. It will
run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday night
and 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. Saturday.
Two things will guarantee a great
show for everyone involved, organizers
say. The first is to have every exhibitor
space filled. The second is to get a large
crowd out to enjoy the event.
Organizers note that farmers will be
over their "spring farm -show hang-
over," and that first -cut hay will be off
and grain harvest will not have started.
Admission prices are $2 for adults,
kids under 12 free. Ken Irwin of
Lucknow is the Farm Show chairman.
Interested exhibitors are asked to con-
tact him at 519-528-3224 (work) or 519-
529-7337. Proceeds from the show will
be used for community betterment.0
HYDRO OFFERS
LIGHTING REBATE
Ontario Hydro has introduced an
Energy Efficient Lighting (EEL) pro-
gram to encourage the use of more effi-
cient agricultural lighting systems while
maintaining adequate lighting levels.
For each compact fluorescent light
purchased, there is a $5 rebate. Because
there is a $100 rebate minimum, at least
20 lights must be purchased.
The following steps must be fol-
lowed to qualify for the rebate:
1. Call your area Hydro office. A
representative will discuss with you
(possibly in a farm visit) which lighting
option is more cost efficient for your
operation.
2. Only upon notice from Ontario
Hydro that the application has been
approved can producers purchase and
install the lights.
3. A Hydro representative verifies
installation, retains a copy of the paid
purchase receipt, and has the farmer sign
the approved incentive form.
4. A rebate cheque is sent directly to
the farm.0

SUPPLEMENT FOR
LACTATING COWS
A feed supplement for dairy cows in
lactation, formulated to improve the
yield and quality of milk as well as
improve condition, fertility, and health,
has been produced by a British com-
pany.
Dairy Powerpack from Tithebarn
Ltd. combines fives ingredients — Yea-
Sacc, Alkakarb, Ruminant fishmeal,
Megalac, and Vitamin E — to provide a
low-cost, effective forage supplement.
The combination improves the di-
gestion of and increases the appetite for
silage, and it enhances butterfat and
protein production.
Yea-Sacc and Alkakarb assist in the
better digestion of forage, while the
fishmeal is rich in essential amino acids
in an easily absorbed form which aids in
increased milk production. Megalac is a
protective fat providing a concentrated
source of energy without inhibiting
rumen fermentation or forage digestion.
Vitamin E encourages the cow's own
immune system to defend against patho-
gens likely to cause mastitis or other
health problems.
The Vitamin E content is also of
benefit to the calf. If the supplement is
fed to the mother prior to calving, the
Vitamin E level of the calf will rise,
improving its vitality and health in the
first few days of life.
Dairy Powerpack is available in
meal form. The recommended mini-
mum feed is 1 kg per day for the first 100
days of lactation, preferably one week
before calving. It can be given as a top
dressing in silage, mixed with cereals or
beet pulp as a midday feed, or incorpo-
rated with the normal feed through a
mixer wagon.
Enquiries from prospective Cana-
dian agents are welcomed by the com-
pany. For details, contact Tithebarn

FEEDERS REDUCE
PIGLET MORTALITY
A British company is seeking agents
and licensees for a range of pig feeders
designed to reduce feed waste and piglet
mortality.
Mumy Feeders, when used by Brit-
ish farmers, have increased piglet sur-
vival by 10 per cent, and at weaning
piglets were heavier and had a better life
expectancy.
The company's creep feeder can be
used by piglets as soon as they are born.
It supplies water, milk, and other liquid
feed and includes a solid -feed dispenser.
Its design encourages piglets to take
solid feed and teaches them how to use
the larger feeders.
The feeders are designed for use in
piggeries with a fully or partially slatted
floor, and reduce waste by delivering
only a small, easily regulated measure
of feed into the trough.
Nuts, pellets, or meal are dispensed
into the trough when the pig pushes a
flap with its nose; this action also agi-
tates the hopper so that the feed flows
smoothly. A piped trough gives an
unlimited supply of drinking water.
There are three sizes: from 5 to 14
kg, from 14 to 30 kg, and from 30 kg up.
