VEAL MANAGEMENT
TO BE EXAMINED
Public concerns about the veal in-
dustry have prompted producers, Agri-
culture Canada, and scientists at the
University of Guelph to embark on the
most comprehensive Canadian study
ever of veal management strategies and
calf welfare.
"This is a big step towards resolving
controversial issues about veal calf
welfare," says Andrew Luescher, an
Ontario Veterinary College ethologist
involved in the study.
Data will be collected through a
questionnaire sent to members of the
Ontario Veal Association and through
on-farm studies.
The on-farm research will evaluate
calf behavioural patterns on special -fed
veal operations. The research team will
also examine the merits of different
production techniques related to carcass
quality and calf health, including factors
such as diet, housing, and carcass grad-
ing.
By addressing these aspects,
Luescher says he hopes it will be pos-
sible to develop ways of accurately de-
termining the health, welfare, and per-
formance of veal calves.
The veal project is being funded at
the Ontario Veterinary College by the
Ontario Cattlemen's Association.0
DAYCARE STUDY
IN HURON COUNTY
Women Today, a group located in
Clinton, Ontario, is being funded
through the Canada Employment
Centre (Goderich) to research and make
recommendations for the implementa-
tion of a county -wide private home
child-care system.
Project co-ordinator Dianne Beach
says a regulated private home system
could be the answer to child-care needs
in Huron County.
"Huron County ... covers a wide
geographic area, most of which is rural,"
she says. "Child-care needs to be easily
accessed and have a flexibility of hours
that is not feasible in a daycare centre."
