CUTS THREATEN
MVCA PROJECT
Cuts in funding for the rural waste
management activities of the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority will
make it difficult for the MVCA to con-
tinue to work towards reducing water
pollution in the Maitland River this
year, the authority says.
The authority reports that since 1986
the Ministry of Environment has funded
extensive water sampling and survey
work to determine sources of bacterial
pollution. In addition, technical assis-
tance has been provided to landowners
to help clean up pollution problems.
In 1989, a major study of local
sources of pollution in the Maitland
River watershed identified faulty septic
systems, cattle access to watercourses,
and poor manure -spreading practices as
the most common causes of bacterial
pollution.
A report of the results of the study is
available by calling the authority at 519-
335-3557.
"With this study complete, the work
of cleaning up the pollution sources was
just beginning," says Ken Westman,
MVCA general manager. "Unfortu-
nately the MOE chose this time to re-
duce its commitment."
The MOE's decision to cut funding
came in March, after the MVCA's
budget for the year had been set.
"In the fall of 1989, MOE asked the
MVCA to consider funding part of the
cost of this program," says Marlene
Shiell, MVCA secretary -treasurer.
"The conservation authority agreed, but
we still had no idea of the level of cost-
sharing they expected."
The MVCA is now considering
ways of maintaining rural waste man-
agement activities in 1990.0
SASKATCHEWAN PIGS
ARE TRAVELLING IN STYLE
Saskatchewan pigs are being trans-
ported in more comfort, thanks to a new
information program.
Swine transport trucks are being
issued cards that list the recommended
number of animals to be shipped under
certain conditions. The cards are kept in
the truck cabs.0
