6 THE RURAL VOICE
SAFETY ON THE FARM
Adrian Vos, from Huron County, has
contributed to The Rural Voice since
its inception in 1975.
Several times in the past years I
have written about safety on the farm.
For me it was easy. Neither I nor my
family had ever been seriously
injured.
Now things have changed. I have
been retired as an active farmer and, lo
and behold, here I write this column
from the hospital after a tractor
accident.
We have all seen those pictures
from the Farm Safety Association in
which a tractor flips over backwards
in a split second because the operator
tries to negotiate too steep a slope.
That, I knew, would never, ever
happen to me. I instructed my kids
not to take any chances. Now I am
retired and don't own a farm tractor —
and it still happened. Not with a farm
tractor, but with a simple riding
lawnmower.
Let my experience be a beacon for
anyone who drives a garden tractor or
an all -terrain vehicle, and for anyone
whose children drive a garden tractor
or all -terrain vehicle.
After I get up from this bed, the
doctor tells me I will be half an inch
shorter. I was lucky. I could have
been dead or paralyzed.
You, or your loved one, may not be
so lucky. Listen to the Farm Safety
Association. They have seen it all.°
The Rural Voice thanks Adrian Vos for his dedication as a columnist,
and, above all, wishes him the speediest of recoveries.
