CHOCOLATE...
Just when you think your waistline
has shrunk back to its old shape, along
comes Valentine's Day and another
festive reason to indulge in chocolate
— although for some of us it only
takes an especially bad or good day.
Chocolate, like so many foods
today, has become known for its effect
on our health. We all know that it
isn't the best thing for us, yet it's a
good energy food containing protein,
fat, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphor-
us, iron, sodium, potassium, Vitamin
A, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin.
The Aztecs put much store in their
chocolate, or cacao, as they knew it.
Chocolate was reserved for ceremonial
functions and offered to the gods and
the brave and valiant. Cacao was also
a form of currency in Central Amer-
ica. The Spanish recognized its power
and returned home from Mexico in
1521 with enough seeds to lay the
foundation for their 100 -year mon-
opoly of the cocoa trade.
There has been controversy about
the bitter drink, cacao. It was consid-
ered an aphrodisiac until the end of the
20th century — Casanova said he
drank it instead of champagne. In the
17th century, theologians declared that
the drink should be prohibited among
the monks as it inflamed passions that
led to scandals in the church. It makes
you wonder about the motives behind
giving chocolates to sweethearts on
Valentine's Day!
While reading about the history
of chocolate, I was surprised at how
long chocolate bars have been on
store shelves. Did you know that the
Hershey Kiss was invented in 1907
and now tumbles off the assembly line
at the rate of 1,300 per minute? Milky
way was invented in Chicago in 1923
and the Mars Bar was born in 1932.
Black Magic chocolates were intro-
duced after extensive market research
in 1933, and Smarties popped onto
the market in 1937.
While we do not have chocolate
houses like those that existed in the
1700s and 1800s, we still carry on the
affair with this decadent delight. To
