Such experiences help people to be more tolerant, to avoid stereotyping, and to place renewed emphasis on people, qualities, and values. And recognizing the validity of the struggles of people elsewhere helps the individual to leam from hardships and to improve as a result. "My ten weeks as a student in Africa changed my life," Don says. "Now I push others to go, get others excited to join international agri- cultural and missionary programs, to travel and to exchange in order to learn and to grow." Food producers contribute much more to society than just food; they contribute values and a way of life as well, Don says. The emphasis on individuality in our society, Don argues, is eroding community values, taking with it the advantages of community life. And the rural community, Don adds, has much to offer society as a whole. Rural values, which built this country, have been weakened, Don says, but they have not been lost, and those values should be revived and built on once again. "Family values are important to society," he says. "Community values are important to society. We should make everybody realize the impor- tance of these values and of the inter- dependence between producers and consumers." Food producers contri- bute much more to society than just food; they contribute values and a way of life as well, he says. Experiencing these values, Don says, is one of the rewards of involvement in international relief, overseas agricultural development programs, and exchanges between farming communities. While such programs are, or at least were initially, designed as foreign aid projects, their benefits are much more far-reaching. They are teaching all those involved to re-examine their own attitudes and, Don hopes, to restruc- ture their own lives on the basis of stronger and more lasting values.°
