4 THE RURAL VOICE
FEEDBACK
govemment. He deplores the closet size
of farm meetings and likens the farmer's
position to that of the beaten -down people
of Eastern Europe. There are so many im-
pediments to attending farm meetings;
long hours of work due to necessity or
poor planning, off -farm work by one or
both spouses, recreational activities and,
worst of all, the bewildering noise from
different drummers inspired by self-inter-
est, which makes farmers infer that organ-
izational action is unimportant.
The present generation of farmers
surely follows the news enough to be con-
vinced that there is such a thing as people
power, and that it is important not to be
snowed by bureaucratic plans and proph-
ecies. They should improve on the organ-
izations developed by the previous gener-
ation, and fund research to formulate pol-
icies in their own interest. There is the old
cliche, "He who pays the piper calls the
tune." Other have been paying the piper.0

In response to
"Growing Together"
An excerpt from a letter to MP Harry
Brightwell, in response to the federal
discussion paper on national agricultural
policy, "Growing Together" :
I would like to start by addressing
number four in the paper: "Canadian agri-
culture must be environmentally sound."
I would like to see this made manda-
tory, and soil testing done to ascertain
what level of nutrients is present and
which nutrients are leaching out of the soil
into the water table and streams. Also, a
minimum level of organic matter should be
established, and anything that does not
come up to this minimum should be taken
out of cash -crop production. This would
eliminate much of the soil loss due to
erosion. In addition, there should be a
maximum allowable use of fertilizers,
especially nitrogen, per hectare.
Number two: "The industry must be
self reliant and capable of generating
reasonable returns from the marketplace."
Question: which marketplace? Provin-
cial? National? International? With mar-
keting boards in place, provincial and na-
tional marketplaces have proven to be able
to be just that. However, those commodi-
ties with no marketing boards that have to
compete internationally have proven to
follow a boom and bust cycle. And with
trade barriers being removed, there will be
