PRODUCT HELPS
WEAK PIGLETS
To say pork producers are paid only
for pigs shipped out the door is to repeat
the obvious. But if the goal is so obvi-
ous, why isn't every Ontario pork pro-
ducer shipping 25 pigs/sow/year?
The number of pigs shipped hinges
firstly on how many piglets a farmer was
able to keep alive, especially during that
first critical week of life. Nutrition can
play a key role — not just for the piglet,
but for the sow before she farrows.
The question always asked is: how
can I save just one more pig in a litter?
This question is being addressed by
Shur -Gain's MOM concept.
Years ago, Shur -Gain answered the
question of how to increase the energy
reserves of the little pig. This was done
through the addition of a high quality
tallow in a supplement or a topdress.
But if the piglet's energy reserve
"deplenishes" before it has a chance to
compete for a teat and receive colos-
teram, the battle to save that one more
pig has been lost.
"Survive" is the name of a product
produced by Shur -Gain that provides
energy to those weak, dull, listless pig-
lets that end up as a death statistic.
A low-cost, effective way to in-
crease vigour in the bottom third to half
of the litter, Survive is part of the total
MOM neonatal piglet care system.0
