Kickstarting
a New Year
by Coralie Adams
e found that arriving for
dinner 1 1/2 days early
posed a bit of a problem both for our
hostess and ourselves. She was busy
and we had nothing to do.
We caught our hostess, my sister
Audrey, on her knees. She was posi-
tioning the soaking bottom end of a
sheet of wallpaper, while her neigh-
bour, Karla, was positioning the top.
Now my husband and I both do
wallpaper but not after a 3 1/2 hour
drive in blowing snow. So we politely
declined to offer help — except critic-
ism. The neighbour, Karla, soon ban-
ished us: "This is a difficult enough
job," she said, "without inspectors.
Go ye therefore to the coffee pot and
we shall join you as soon as we are
done this strip."
While we were having coffee I
noticed something — it was getting
dark. "Audrey," I said, "what about
your pigs?"
"Pigs," Audrey said absently,
"what about ... oh ... Deb fed them
before you arrived."
Then Audrey asked, "Didn't you
notice anything different when you
walked in here?"
"Well yes, you arc wallpapering."
"And?"
"And?"
"You walked right by it!"
"What?" I fairly howled.
"A dishwasher!" Audrey shouted
with glee. "I got a dishwasher for
Christmas!"
And by golly she did! But soon
after we inspected it. and gave it our
wholehearted approval, we noticed a
little problem. It stuck out into the
room.
"Hmmm," I said, "I don't think
that your husband has been mad at me
for at least a month now, has he?"
"Longer than that," Audrey
replied.
