Sawmiller operator Richard Keeso of
Listowel attributes much of the price
decline to reduced demand and the
higher Canadian dollar. Since ash
lumber is very similar to red oak, it
usually follows price trends for red
oak, which has fallen off
considerably recently.
And, a high percentage of
Canadian lumber is exported to the
U.S., so the high Canadian dollar is
squeezing margins in the lumber
business just as it is for many other
manufacturing industries that export
south of the border.
One industry where the EAB has
definitely had a major impact is the
nursery business. Just a few years
ago, ash was a major species for both
urban plantings and reforestation
efforts. After discovery of EAB,
demand for ash nursery stock fell to
virtually nothing. Nursery grower
Todd Baker from the Bayfield area
indicates h% has burned hundreds of
thousands of dollars worth of ash
nursery stock in the last few years
due to the sudden drop off in
demand.
Many questions about this pest
remain unanswered. Currently it has
been confined to areas where there is
very little forest cover. Will it have
as major an impact in areas where
there is more forest cover?
In some infested woodlots there
are some trees that appear to have
survived the insect's attack. Do these
trees have some natural resistance? If
so, should they be protected so they
can hopefully produce resistant
progeny?
There are six native species of
ash in Ontario. Are some more
resistant, or are they all equally
affected? It has been estimated that
there are a billion ash trees in
Ontario's forests. If these trees
disappear, what will our forests look
like and what will the impacts be on
forest values such as biodiversity,
site protection, water quality, etc.?
There's definitely enough
potential research material here to
create a lot of new PhDs. Next
month, more about forest health.
