The Rural Voice, 2006-11, Page 31CM Schultz shows off one of the largest models in their collection.
Cliff says, "The toy models may
look old and rare, but you have to
pay close attention to the colouring
and size when buying a particular
model and year."
The Schultz brothers used to show
their toy tractors at the Huron
Pioneer Thresher Reunion at Blyth.
They started showing them in 1989,
but have since stopped due to the size
of the collection they have. "There's
way too many to move," says Don.
The first model they purchased was
a 1/16 scale International 3588.
When asked why they have such a
huge collection, "We never had any
when we were kids and we're both
guilty of having classic tractor fever,"
Cliff said with a chuckle.
Their collection has now spread
into the buying of farm tractors.
The brothers started two years ago
and now have a collection of
International tractors ranging in era
from 1957 to 1975, 50 to be exact,
which they still use today on the
farm.
The first tractor they purchased
was a 1962 International 606, bought
in 1962.
Although they have older models,
Don says, "There aren't too many
guys who collect newer models."
The newer models are what the
brothers are more interested in at the
moment.
The first year the Schultzes showed
their collection of farm tractors at the
Thresher Reunion was 2005 when
they took out eight of the rarer ones.
In 2006 they were back at the
Reunion showing different ones than
they showed the previous year, but
the rarer tractors also came out again.
"My favourite part of going to the
Thresher Reunion is meeting a lot of
interesting people and being able to
talk to them about tractors," Cliff
said.
They have purchased their tractors
from as far as Manitoba in the west
to the Quebec border.
When looking for newer tractors
they look through the agricultural
publications.
All the tractors that the Schultzes
own have been restored by them.
When asked why they only have
International tractors, Cliff says, "We
grew up with them and I like the red
and white paint."
Don said, " Working with Snell
Feed and Supply (in the nearby
hamlet of Westfield), always being
around International tractors, they
grew on me."
The brothers have just recently
finished re -painting their 1966
Farmall 1206. "It's a rarer tractor due
to the narrow front end." Cliff said.
Due to the growing of their
collection of farm tractors, the
Schultzes have plans to start
construction of a new shed to house
the tractors, plus a van full of toy
model tractors.
"As long as model toy tractors are
manufactured, then we will keep
adding to our collection," the
brothers said"0
