"How to Manage People on Your
Farm" - Gary Mawhinney, Labor
Specialist, OMAFRA. (Danen sees
this as an opportunity for young
farmers who often have little
experience hiring and managing
employees.)
"Innovative Rural Communities

"Concentrating on Corporate
Control- How Can Farmers Fight
Back?" Panel Discussion. This will
be held in conjunction with the
OFA's annual convention which is
held immediately following the
meeting for young farmers.
The Forum has been a big part
of the learning process for the
Danen family. Ed attended one
of the early events and was a
participant in a panel discussion on
farm succession issues a couple of
years ago. Also participating in that
panel was Dundalk -area farmer Paul
DeJong, who with his wife Dorien
was the Ontario Young Farmer of the
Year in 2004.
DeJong is a big booster of the
event, like Julie Danen saying it's a
great opportunity for young people of
similar ages to get together and
discuss opportunities.
"Back home there aren't that
many young people who want to
farm," he says. The Forum is an
opportunity to get encouragement
from other farmers in similar
positions, to share ideas and pick up
ideas from others on how to proceed
into agriculture. Farmers might pick
up ideas on possible niche crops to
grow or marketing ideas by talking
with others, he says
There's key information available
on the business aspects of farming,
DeJong says.
In addition, the Forum shows the
benefits of belonging to an
organization, says DeJong, who is
past president of the Grey County
Federation of Agriculture.
Paul Nairn, one of those involved
in planning the Forum, sees this as a
two-way street. "I see it as
encouraging young farmers to be
involved in an organization," says the
long-time member of JFAO and
current OFA Field Representative for
