those things — the more you know
about your woodlot, the better," he
says. "You may not want to touch it
(your woodlot) but that's okay too."
The Huron -Perth Woodlot
Association was formed in 1995 and
is a chapter of the Ontario Woodlot
Association (OWA) , says Steve
Bowers, Huron Stewardship Co-
ordinator who has been heavily
involved with the association since
its creation. The group has about 150
members and over the years has been
one of the largest chapters in the
province.
One of the benefits of the Huron -
Perth group's decision to become a
chapter of the OWA is the excellent
quarterly newsletter that group
produces, Bowers says. It gives
members a chance to learn what's
happening in forestry across the
province.
On its own, the Huron -Perth
chapter holds three or four events a
year "depending on the energy and
ideas", says Bowers. After so many
years they've dealt with so many
topics that it's time to start looking at
revisiting some topics, he says.
especially since there are new
members joining who haven't had
the benefit of hearing the earlier
presentations.
The group holds its annual
meeting in conjunction with a tour
each spring.
The biggest benefit to members
is the chance to meet with
other woodlot owners who are
in a similar situation to their own,
Bowers says. They can informally,
for instance, compare information on
loggers and log buyers and learn who
gives the best prices and service.
As well, since the executive of the
Association includes Bowers, himself
a forester and woodlot owner, and
Marvin Smith, a woodlot consultant
and woodlot owners, there is access
to technical advice for members.
"One of the roles the executive
plays is to figure out what people
want and need to know," Bowers
says.
The Bruce County Woodlot
Association was formed in 2001,
encouraged by a $1,000 donation
from the Bruce Resource
Stewardship Network, which also
loans Stewardship Co-ordinator
Craig Todd as secretary. Currently
there are about 55 members, the vast
