Munroe Barn in 2004 to hold model
steam displays, the Mrs. Munroe
barn for women's exhibits and this
year there will be a grand opening for
a new 64 by 96 -foot barn to house
horse-drawn equipment from the
Bruce County Museum. Since the
museum started its renovation project
the Heritage Association has been
caring for the farm equipment and
now will house it permanently.
Attendance has grown by 30 per
cent in each of the last two years,
says Kelly and now stands at 11,000
to 12,000 people. The organization
has targeted two untapped audiences
to continue that growth: women and
children and Lakeshore residents.
Despite the huge growth, a
survey showed that 79 per
cent of the people at last
year's show had been there before.
Obviously a lot of people who hadn't
been there recently came back last
year, says Kelly. The trick is to keep
finding new things that will bring
people back regularly.
Adding to the attraction of the
show is the music, from a jam
session Friday night through to
entertainment on the main stage on
Sunday afternoon. There's also a
church service Sunday morning.
For others, there's a crafters
market and children's activities,
There are other ways to measure
the growth. Virtue says there are 560-
570 voting memberships now. The
number of people camping at the site
has also grown.
Partners in the show's growth
have been local charitiable
organizations that provide all the
food services at the site, days Virtue.
"It's working with the community."
One of the specialties of the show
is to salute a different model of
tractor each year. This year Case
tractors and equipment are featured
and Virtue invites owners of Case
equipment to join in the celebration.
It was Virtue's interest in tractors
that got him involved in the group at
its formation. His father had a 60
Oliver tractor and he later bought one
and restored it. His hobby grew from
there as he collected Oliver and
Cockshutt tractors. Today he has
three Cockshutts and two Olivers and
had to build onto his garage to house
them.
