•Farm Crisis acknowledged in the federal budget
Farm reaction to the May 2
Federal Budget could best be
described as guarded at this point.
Perth Federation President Bob
Martin is glad to see that the
announcement of $1.5 billion was not
a re -announcement of previously
allocated dollars. and "hopes the
Conservatives' mention of a long
term plan for agriculture means the
Risk Management Program farmers
have presented to government".
"There is an acknowledgment at
the political level of an urgent need in
Canada's farm community for
immediate assistance." said Ron
Bonnett. President of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture. "What we
need now is to work with the federal
government to ensure that the
funding will flow to farmers in
desperate need.-
"On April 5. 10.000 farmers from
across Canada came to Ottawa to
showcase the unprecedented farm
income crisis and to look for hope
from the government" said Bob
Friesen. President of the Canadian
Federation of Agriculture. "$1.5
billion dollars is a lot of money, but if
that money doesn't get to farmers
quickly and to the right places. all the
money in the world isn't going to fix
the problem." he added.
Farm organizations are concerned
that distribution of the funding
through CAIS . as it is formulated
now. will continue to create
inequities in farm and rural
communities across Canada into the
future.
